WEST SIDE STRONG
________________________________________________________________________________
Since the late 50s and early 60s, the West side of Charlotte and Gaston County near the river has been a hotbed for amazing R&B and Soul bands... playing clubs like the original Cellar and venues like the old Charlotte Park Center. These areas spawned great bands like The Plaids, Pour Souls, The Rivieras, Blacksmith (who became The Fantastic Shakers) and other iconic Beach Music acts, many of which still perform today.
Two members of this new band, Mel Miller and Kenny Sparx literally grew up eight houses apart and a couple or so miles away from other great Beach Music musicians such as Ken Carpenter, Eli Honeycutt, Stewart Mauldin, Dino Fair and the late Hugh (Tuff) Blanton.
Mel and Kenny played together in the Fabulous Plaids with Ken Carpenter and Eli Honeycutt for many years and both have filled in for many of the other prominent beach Music Bands in the area. In fact, the Plaids performed on the first ever Beach Music Awards Show (now known as The Cammy Awards) in Myrtle Beach in 1982.
Fast forward many years to 2023 when Mel formed the band Mel Miller & Friends featuring the incomparable James Bates (Cracker Band, The Spontanes) that included Keyboardist extraordinaire Tad Hough, Bassist and long time well know Charlotte radio host Jim Shafer and guitarist Bo Baity. Together, the band cut two records, both of which received airplay on the major Beach Music stations throughout the Carolinas.
Then, without warning, the unthinkable happened! Sadness gripped the entire local and regional music community when James Bates passed away unexpectedly in 2025. The band was at a crossroads!
After much conversation and prayer, the band decided to try and carry on to honor James in any way possible, because we all knew that would be what he wanted us to do!
So, Mel reached out to Kenny to see if he knew anyone who might be interested in the guitar gig. Being longtime friends, Kenny immediately jumped at the chance to come along side his West Side brethren and continue performing. During the transition, an opportunity presented itself to add a female vocalist to the mix. Enter the amazing Wendy Russell, whom Mel had worked with for a long time at his West side club Merlin's.
All at once magic was born! The harmonies, the musicianship and most importantly, the chemistry all fell perfectly into place and Groove Harbor was born!
It is onward an upward from here with our first release written by Charlie Sattenfield called Empty Beach Chair. Check out Groove Harbor... it will be time well spent!

Kenny is a multi-instrumentalist, highly proficient on 11 instruments. He shares lead vocals and sings the very highest first tenor harmonies for Groove Harbor. TAD HOUGH – Keyboards & Vocals
Tad has been a professional keyboard player for over four decades with a body of recording and live work ranging from rock and funk to jazz and beach. His performances have taken him on tours throughout the United States primarily in the southeast. Tad was born into a musical family in Gastonia NC. His dad played jazz saxophone and his mother played piano and sang. He was surrounded by the classical, church and the 60s rock and soul music of the day. Having started piano in the first grade, he was electrified by the Beatle’s appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in early ’64. “Suddenly I knew I had to be involved in music for the rest of my life.”
Tad started playing keys in a wide variety of regional bands and studying music with Ziggy Hurwitz, a legend in the Charlotte music world. Tad has played with many recording artists, Percy Sledge, Billy Joe Royal, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, the Poor Souls. Singer George Hatcher contacted Tad to record keys and arrange strings on the Coming Home album, distributed in both the US and Europe.
Recently, Tad has been holding down the keyboards with Blind Manifest, The Harvest band, and most recently, GROOVE HARBOR!
WENDY RUSSELL - Vocals
Wendy grew up singing in church and school bands. During and after college, she sang in too many weddings and receptions to count. Her first cover band right out of college was "Freeway", based in Marietta, OH. A variety/rock/top 40 cover band.
Wendy has joined Groover Harbor, working with a very talented bunch of local musicians and putting together a song list sure to have something for everyone.

Mel is from Charlotte and has played with many successful local bands in and around Charlotte. Some of these include The Cracker Band, The Fabulous Plaids and The Mirrors Band to name a few.
